Abstract

Introduction. In modern sports medicine, and in football in particular, there is an urgent need to find new safe substances capable of optimizing metabolic processes in athletes under hypoxic conditions during professional workloads. One of the promising substances classified as potential antihypoxants is isocitric acid. It removes the block of succinate dehydrogenase in the Krebs cycle, which reduces the speed of the entire cycle and, consequently, energy production, and also decreases oxygen consumption. Aim. To study the effect of isocitric acid and supplemental nutritional supplement containing it on the dynamics of individual laboratory parameters of the hemostasis, erythropoiesis, and iron metabolism systems. Material and methods. A blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study of the effect of isocitric acid and supplemental nutritional supplement based on it on the dynamics of individual laboratory parameters of the oxygen transport system and hemostasis was conducted on professional football players during the competitive stage of the annual training cycle. Results. In football players taking 200 mg of isocitric acid, statistically significant changes were observed in oxygen transport system parameters: transferrin saturation percentage and serum iron content decreased, and unsaturated iron-binding capacity of serum increased. In football players taking 100 mg of isocitric acid as part of a supplemental nutritional supplement, hemoglobin levels increased and red blood cell count decreased. In football players taking 200 mg of isocitric acid or 100 mg of isocitric acid as part of a supplemental nutritional supplement, similar dynamics of coagulation parameters were observed: statistically significant increases were observed in activated partial thromboplastin time, international normalized ratios, and prothrombin time, while statistically significant decreases were observed in such parameters as the prothrombin index and fibrinogen, which indicates a targeted effect of isocitric acid on the hemostatic system — hypocoagulation. Conclusion. Isocitric acid improves adaptation to moderate hypoxia, which leads to metabolic restructuring, improved rheological properties of the blood and, as a consequence, to increased performance, especially in anaerobic conditions.
